Memoirs of the West The Spauldings Eliza Spaulding Warren 1915

First Edition. Cloth. 153pp. Frontispiece, plus 9 additional plates.

This scarce work includes the Diary of Mrs. H. H. Spalding's Overland March Across the Continent 1836-1838, Letters of Dr. Spalding, 1842-1845; Reminiscences of Eliza Spalding Warren; etc. A near fine, clean, bright copy

The author, Eliza Spaulding Warren, is the daughter of Dr. Henry H. Spalding, one of the first Presbyterian missionaries to the Nez Perces Indians. Born in 1837 at the Lapwai Mission in the Pacific Northwest, she was the first American white child to reach maturity in that region. At the age of 10, she witnessed the tragic massacre at the Whitman Mission, where Dr. Marcus Whitman, his wife, and several others were killed by Cayuse Indians. Her memoir offers a valuable first-hand perspective on the region, including insights on Dr. McLaughlin and the Hudson's Bay Company, as well as accounts of fur trader and trapper Peter S. Ogden and other members of the missionary community.
