Joshua Pilcher was a daring adventurer of the fur-trade era. He had a bold vision of himself and other explorers as trailblazers of the unknown West. A relentless businessman in the fur trade for several years and eventually an Indian agent, Pilcher's ventures often ended in failure or only partial success. In 1819, he became a partner with Manuel Lisa in forming the Missouri Fur Company and took over leadership after Lisa's death a year later. Despite an unsuccessful expedition to the Yellowstone in 1821 and joining Col. Henry Leavenworth in an attack against the Arikaras in 1823, Pilcher remained undaunted. He persisted by forming another company and leading an expedition to Fort Vancouver, although it yielded little except for a report praising the Oregon territory as a promising settlement location and the South Pass (later Oregon Trail) as a manageable route.
