Reconnaissance of the Western Coast of the United States Middle Sheet From San Francisco to Umpquah River. 1854 (J No. 2) Middle Sheet.
A remarkable 1854 map by the United States Coast Survey. Covers the coastline of California and Oregon from San Francisco (depicted) northwards as far as the Umpqua (Umpquah) River. Offers soundings only along the coast line - suggesting the primitive state of the survey in this region. The map features twelve impressive coastal profile views on its right side. The top left quadrant includes useful information about tides, lighthouses, and sailing instructions. It is part of a three-chart series published by the Coast Survey to showcase their advancements in the region. The map credits G. Davidson as its positioning source and James Alden for leading the Hydrography party. It was published under the guidance of A.D. Bache, an influential superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey.
