Octavo, original gilt- and black-stamped maroon/brown cloth, floral patterned endpapers. 1882 newly revised edition of this influential guidebook on California by the grandfather of co-author of the Bounty trilogy, with over 75 splendid wood-engraved illustrations (nearly 20 more than the first edition), including frontispiece map and four full-page maps, along with a map of Northern California not present in the first edition, in original bright gilt-stamped cloth.

Journalist Charles Nordhoff was a leading reporter for Harpers and leading New York newspapers when, as background for his 19th-century history of California. California: For Health, Pleasure, and Residence (1872),  revised and expanded by him for this 1882 edition, It opens with descriptions of the various routes available to the traveler to California and the visitor to Yosemite
