The second London edition, preceded by the first London edition of 1831 and the first American edition of 1832, has a slightly different title than its predecessors. It is regarded as the main source of knowledge on Oregon during the early 1800s. Cox, who was part of the Astoria party in 1812 and later worked for the North West Company, left Hawaii and arrived in Oregon in 1817. His narrative provides a comprehensive and factual depiction of the fur trade and the various Indian tribes in Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington, which were both trading partners and adversaries for the fur traders.
